Most of us had heroes when we were growing up. For some, it was our fathers or grandfathers. For others, it was a teacher or professional sports star. But for a whole generation of boys (and girls), it was the most famous resident of Butte, Montana: Robert Craig “Evel†Knievel.
From his rough and tumble, sometimes criminal beginnings, Knievel scratched and clawed his way into almost every neighborhood through his televised attempts to leap cars, buses and even the fountains at Caesars’ Palace in Las Vegas. His successes were spectacular; his failures even more so. His ability to overcome injuries from crashes only added to the public’s belief in Evel Knievel’s immortality. Shockingly, in spite of countless crashes and 37 broken bones, Knievel lived to be 69 years old!
On July 10
th, the memory of Evel Knievel is to be celebrated at the Harley-Davidson Museum in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The exhibit will contain memorabilia, motorcycles and even a guest appearance by his daughter, Kelly Knievel, but it is a limited-time event running only to Labor Day.Â
Fortunately, our podcast celebrating the career of Evel Knievel should be available longer than that, and you can find it here.Â
